If not properly understood, it can prevent further advancement or development and can have negative repercussions. Here self does not mean the ego self or biological self. It means the inner invincible, formless self or the spirit of the soul. The biological self or the ego self or the mind self can not give much help because it is limited and is subjected to decease, decay and death. Moreover if we think too much of the ego self, we will be ruled and limited by the ego and can not attain the full development of the human being. This also means no self realization and no perfection. Faith and love and constant attempts to over come the biological ego self, help us to realize own inner self and spirit of the soul or attainment of divinity. In the Raj Yoga of Patanjali, it is methodically described as Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayam, Pratyahar, Dharna, Dhyan and Samadhi or oneness with the creator of the creation.

Now in these days of rapidly advancing technology, human beings are unable to cope up with the changing times. Natural and man made calamities are threatening the quality and quantity of life, Grudgingly human beings are turning to religion and spirituality for solace and comfort and assurance. Human beings have fallen pray to the carrot and stick policy of their senses and mind. The creator intended the human beings to be the master of them selves. As mentioned in the Holi Bhagwat Gita, a person is his own best friend if he is subdued his lower or biological nature (Senses, Mind, Intellect and Ego) and realized his own inner invisible formless as his real self. If a person has not realized his true or inner formless self, falls easy pray to the lower and animal nature and is guided by his senses, mind and ego, becomes his own enemy. He gets confused and seeks out side guidance to solve his problems which is associated with dependence on others and giving his own self in mortgage to clever manipulators (not god realized person) and losses his divinity and freedom and chances of self realization. It is equivalent to getting into quick sand the more on struggles the deeper one goes into it.

So accept none as your guide and guru to attain self realization, except God. And others are teachers. If you do not believe in god you should have faith and belief in your real or inner self or spirit of god. How ever human gurus are teachers can show the ways. But they should not substitute God. They should be shown proper respect and treated humbly, lovingly with self discipline. But the teacher should not practice giving unrealistic high sounding assurances.

BRAHNABDAM LAKHYAANAM SARVAM

DEHA MADHYE BYABASTHITAM

SAAKARASCHA VINASYATI, NIRAKARA NA NASYATI.

The meaning is the whole universe (Creation and the Creator) is situated in the human system. The human system has two components, the visible form and the invisible formless. The visible or the form on the perceptible (Body, Mind, Ego) is as a rule fall victim to diseases, old age and death. However the inner self or the formless, or the soul or the spirit is disease less and deathless. This immortal inner self though activates, energies, enlivens all forms of the creation is one, all pervading and store house of all powers, energies, knowledge and whatever you seek. The yoga scriptures declare:

EKO DEVA SARBA BHUTESU GUDAH SARVA BYAPI SARVA BHUTANTARAATMAN

That one invisible god is abiding deep within every being as its soul. This is also all pervading spirit beyond time and space.

So if one can reach his/her inner self one can have the right answer to all questions. Then what prevents is to do exactly this? It is the restlessness of the mind and thoughts which prevents us to consult our soul or the spirit. If by practicing some methods or techniques, we can calm down the restlessness of mind and thought and concentrate this calm mind lovingly on the soul, we can feel in fact realize our oneness with the soul and have all our questions answered. We get the Kaama Dhenu” or the wishful fulfilling cow.

What is the best, quick acting technique for this? Our classical Kriya Yoga is the ultimate answer to self realization. But best results are obtained by lovingly practicing Kriya Yoga, twice daily sincerely. Kriya Yoga is a balanced combination of all major methods of yoga, such as Karma Yoga or action dedicated to god including its results, Bhakti Yoga or path of selfless love for the creator and his whole creation, Gyan Yoga or the dedicated intellectual of self analysis leading to wisdom, Raj Yoga or the path of sense control, mind control and spiritual ecstasy.

To learn this original Kriya Yoga, initiation (introduction, motivation energisation and personal guidance and teaching) is needed at first. Then one can practice in ones own home. It is simple and has no rigid rules. It is comparable to the legendary Kaama Dhenu or wish fulfilling divine cow and kalpabrukshya, the wish fulfilling eternal tree.

We advice our students to learn and practice of referring their questions to their inner self or Isht Deva. Have patience and faith. You will get the answer in your own mind. Remain alert to it. Be ensured it works.

All the time god or our inner self is trying to guide us and help us. But the restless mind prevents us from realizing it. In fact you can solve your problems by this technique.

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; She revealed that one of her toes was found in her socks when she took the socks off in the evening. “A part of me fell off and I was not even aware of it” She said.

GROSS PHYSICAL BODY

Can a part of oneself really fall off and one not know it? The toes that she found in her socks, was that her? Am I this body? Certainly the answer is no. when one drives a car to go from one place to another one never make the mistake to assume that the car is he. But then why does one think that one is the body? This false identification of the body as self is due to lack of finer perception. Lack of finer perceptions leads one to make false judgment. Gross judgment leads to false identification. Hence perceptions need to be made finer with practice (Sadhana).

BREATH BODY

Breath is subtler than the body and keeps the body alive. As long as a body has breath one is alive and when breathing stops one is dead. So can the breath be the “I” we are looking for. We know that breath (along with whatever it carries with it) keeps the gross body alive. The masters and scriptures call it “PRANA”, literally meaning life.

When perceptions with practice begin to get finer in quality from gross one can feel that one is indeed the breath. The “I” identification shifts from gross physical body to finer breath body permeating the whole physical body. Initially the breath feels like a faint energy permeating the body which changes in quality with inspiration and expiration. The perception becomes strong with more liquid like in quality as if the breath is a liquid permeating the body. Different parts and nature of breath reveal themselves in greater detail (Inspiration, pause after inspiration, expiration and the pause after expiration). How breath feels or behaves in different parts of the body also is revealed. When the perceptions become finer with practice one can invariably see the correlation between breath and the mental tendencies. As if the mind and the breath are invariably tied to each other like a pair. It is gradually perceived that PRANA (the content of the gross breath) powers the mind and the body. Both the mind and the body seem to disappear when PRANA is withdrawn yet perception remains. Gradually one can see that PRANA is the master of the mind and the body. This Pranic body is sometimes called the ethereal body.

CAUSAL BODY

As perception deepens one can know that every perception of the self is nothing but only made of ideas or thoughts. The presence of prana, mind, breath, physical sensations is only perception. They are indeed devoid of substance. Material is as real as the material we see every night in our dreams. Real in the relative world but totally unreal (absent) when the relativities are broken. When we wake up from dream and the conditions that prevailed in the dream are broken, the material nature of dream is no more present. The bullet of the dream only works inside the dream but utterly powerless when one is awake. Every perception is relative hence untrue as is subject to change. So can “I” be any perceptions? The essential “I” is not the perceptions as it is changeless and not bound by relativities.

BEYOND THE THREE BODIES

All the three bodies are subject to change as they are mere perceptions. However much beyond the three bodies lays the perceiver. Who is essentially different than all else. Self existent, self manifested, self illuminant. The same perceiver exist in wakeful state, dream state and in every other state that one can perceive yet remains free from all states. The seers who have reached the same state have declared that it is pure bliss! Paramananda ! Atmanandaji !

TAT TVAM ASI (THOU ART THAT)

A mere intellectual understanding cannot lead one to be a seer. There has to be inner transformation by direct observation of finer tattwas. It is only possible when one become adapt in yoga by techniques given by the Guru and by his blessings and guidance. One needs sincere effort, love and control of senses. As long as one does not have right motivation, practice cannot deepen. Without love, sadhana is a waste. Without sense control delusions remain. Lack of self control signifies that false identification still remains with physical body and mind as the self.

With service, submission and right question serve a Gyani (Tatwadarsi).

These were chanted when the Vedas in its entirety have already been revealed. The seers started to manifest the Supreme Knowledge through the Upanishads, and the king Janaka was in Videha. Janaka was famous not only as a king, but also as a great scholar, and the seeker of the Highest Truth or Brahman, The Supreme. Once he performed a sacrifice where learned scholars were gathered from far and near. In order to find out who is the most profound Vedic scholar, he arranged a gathering and declared to give away one thousand cows with each of their horns studded with gold and diamonds to the best scholar.

Yajnavalkya, the eminent scholar of that time, came forward and claimed his supremacy. He knew that he has the highest knowledge of Brahman by knowing which there is nothing left to be known. Other scholars began to interrogate him. One by one he defeated all.

There in that assembly came out the three Mantras. When chanted repeatedly, these Mantras purify the chanter, elevate his consciousness to a higher level and bring about his innate divine power. Whatever he asks for a boon - anything he desires whether for him or for the person who performs the sacrifice gets secured. This is because with the repetition of these Mantras the singer himself is transformed. About these Mantras Swami Krishnananda says: “It is a prayer, a Japa, as well as an Invocation. The prayer is supposed to be a regular meditation to enable the soul to reach the Supreme Being.”

Out of three, the first two lines have hidden meanings. The text explains:

What is Evil? Death. What is Good? Immortality.

What is Darkness? Death. What is Light? Immortality.

In essence, all three Mantras lead to only ONE Meaning: Lead me from Death to Immortality.

The actions and thoughts that are regulated by scriptures are good because they lead us to Immortality. All other actions and thoughts are Evil because they are transitory, changeable, and lead us towards the death. Therefore the inherent meaning of the first mantra “Asato Ma Sad Gamaya “ is explained by Swami Madhabananda as: “From evil actions and ignorance lead me to action and thoughts that are regulated by the Scriptures, i.e. help me to identify myself with those things that lead to divinity instead of things that are not such”.

Second Mantra “Tamaso ma Jyotir Gamaya“ means “All ignorance, being of the nature of a veil is darkness and it again is death, being the cause of it. And light means immortality, the opposite of the above, one’s divine nature. Knowledge being luminous is called light; and it again is immortality, being of an imperishable nature.” The light is the hidden divinity within us. Once we realize this divinity, the darkness is gone forever.

The third Mantra “MrityorMa Amritam Gamaya” gives the combined meaning of the first two, which is: “From death lead me to immortality”.

The Good and the Evil, the Darkness and the Light - all are within us. Swami Krishnanada explains: “Let us rise above this turmoil of transiency of life, and move to the real which is indicated faintly in our personal lives and in the manifestations that are in front of us. The rise is the process of the Ascent of soul to the Absolute.”

- Yogacharya Nupur, Nashville TN USA

Why I meditate?

Yesterday, I was driving my thirteen year young daughter Prachi to her weekly Odissi dance class. I asked her if she did her morning ‘Pranayam’. She sheepishly said ‘no’. She then asked, among other questions. ”why do you meditate daddy?” The question caught me by surprise as I had not thought about it before seriously. I have been practicing Kriya meditation for 15 years as a routine.

To buy time, while I was thinking a proper answer I turned the question around to Prachi and asked “what do you think?”, “mental peace?” she said not very convincingly. This gave me an opening to follow through. I asked her “what is mental peace?” She said quickly “when there is no mental stress”, again weakly. I was still buying time. So I asked her” what is stress?” Here she paused for a long time, and I was thinking furiously to help her out. I asked “do you ever feel stressed?” Yes, she answered” when I asked for a cell phone and you said no”. Many of my friends have.

Then I realized that she was starting to have an ego. She was starting to identify with an image of what is to be important among her friends. She did not want the cell phone because she needed it, but only to look hip. I asked her if she knew the meaning of word “ego”. She shook her head. I tried to explain.

Ego is simply an idea we carry around about who we are. We think we are different, we are better, we have things that others do not, and we look better than others and so on. Possessions, achievements and reputation all of these become calling cards. Things missing in our lives become our goal. These are usually wealth, strength, fame, children and grand children among many other things which together make up something called happiness.

The problem with ego, I told her, is that it makes you feel lesser - we have less of this and less of that and we are worthless. It is such a powerful demon that it wants us stuck in a world of never ending wants and struggles. You don’t remember when you were a baby, I continued, you were in the image of God. You cried when you were hungry. You smiled all the time. You loved everything and everyone. You did not think of other babies as better or worse than you, having more or less than you. You had no ego.

As I continued, I noticed that she was nodding. So, I pressed on. The ego is our idea of how to be happy, be cool and be loved in the world that we identify –our home, our parents, our family, our community and our friends. It is just an idea of our mind and nothing more. “You have an ego now. Do you agree?” I asked her. She nodded in agreement. Now this ego, I continued feeling encouraged, keeps us from knowing our source, which created us, which is in us, which gives us our intelligence, which keeps us alive and which always guided us. Surpringly, we all think that we do whatever we do by simply using our brain. But, if you think a bit harder, you will conclude that the brain is simply a bunch of cells made up of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. What makes it think. It is the Guide. When we lose its guidance that we do some bad things. Keep holding its guiding hands as you did my hand when you were younger and we were at the amusement park. She remembered those days.

If we can change this idea just a little bit, I said, we can start taming this demon ego. How? , she asked.

I felt I was getting somewhere. I explained. Ego keeps us unhappy. GOD is creator and mother, on the other hand loves us and wants us to be happy like a baby. If you watch a baby you will see that as long as a parent is nearby, it keeps playing happily. Once it realizes that there is no parent near by, it starts to cry. Similarly to be happy, we have to be aware of Gods presence. And that he is close by. One we are aware of this, we can merrily go about our work and play without a worry, without any stress. And this is why, I meditate. She looks a little but puzzled. I tried to clarify.

I said, GOD is not visible to our eyes. So one can’t see him the way we see our own parents. Only when our mind is completely silent then we can see and hear GOD. She quickly jumped in how you can hear in silence. I was caught off guard for a moment by this question and the paradox that I had created. But somehow I got a voice, I explained - when you listen to music what do you hear? You hear notes separated by silent gaps. There is no music without the gaps. Is there? “It will be just a long boring note”, she replied. This helped and I continued.

Life is like music. It is wonderful, if we can create some silent gaps between our activities. During the silence, if we can feel God’s presence and we tap a little bit of his grace, our next note or action will be that much more vibrant and that much more effective. Without this refill of the tank, kind of, we may be tired, feel empty and perhaps stressed as our work – our music will be having a lot of sour notes. We may even find ourselves out of gas and stranded one day on the highway of life.

You see I continued, God's only language is silence. To achieve complete silence you have to get rid of all thoughts. You can’t get rid of thoughts if you have an ego. Ego constantly creates noise. Your mind is preoccupied with many problems usually about things you don’t have. Ego is a big wall between you and god. With each meditation, we achieve moments of silence. With this we make small holes in the wall that ego has built. After a while we make so many small holes that this wall crumbles. Then there is nothing between God and us. We become united with him. This oneness with God then opens up all the higher qualities and dimensions such as insight or intuitiveness, creativity, precision, and power. Along with it, we automatically get worry free relaxation, enchantment, bliss and of course mental peace.

Prachi nodded. So in 18 respirations per minute, we retain about 210 ml of oxygen. There is another terminology or explanation for this which is called Vital Capacity. Vital Capacity is that amount of air, the body can retain after full inhalation following the deepest possible exhalation. If I exhale fully, maximum, and then if i inhale deeply, I take about 4,500 to 5,000 ml of air in. 4% of air is about 200 ml of oxygen. See how we are misusing our capacity. Instead of one inhalation, which will meet our requirement of one minute, we are taking 18 inhalations. That means our body is working 18 times more than we need. This is inefficient use of our body machine. So Kriya Yog(a) teaches smooth respiration, rhythmic respiration and maximum utilization of oxygen; also, there is no discomfort, no hardship and no unnecessary strain on the lungs. At the same time there is a transformation of the biological force into spiritual force.

-Paramahansa Atmanandaji

Nashville Kriya Yoga Workshop Feb '09

<img style="float:left; Most people know that, after the age of 40, brain cells start dying rapidly. Everyday our body cells in the Cardiovascular System, Gastrointestinal System, Nervous System and in the Skin System dies. We are not the same person that we were two minutes back. Millions of cells have died. Again millions have been regenerated. This is not the case with brain cells. They are highly specialized cells which cannot be replaced or regenerated. It is only through the exercises of the Kriya Yog(a) technique that by channeling the biological force in the spinal cord you can improve the circulation as well as improve the energy of the brain and spinal cord. The biological force is converted into spiritual force which in turn changes the entire constitution and “Pranic” vibration of the brain. Thereby the degeneration process is very much curtailed. This is the only way you can rejuvenate all the system of the body in a predictable manner. You can delay your aging process. Your lustrous youth can be prolonged and you can improve your body’s resistance to disease thus enhancing your immune system.

-Paramahansa Atmanandaji
